1. Palm Islands

The Palm Islands, also referred to as The Palm Dubai and The Palms, are the three largest man-made islands which are located on the coast of Dubai. Its concept was announced in May 2002. Since the time of its completion it has attracted millions of tourists from around the world and proved as a premium tourist destination. The Palm Islands is also the self-declared ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’.

Each of the islands (Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, and Palm Deira) have been built in the shape of a date palm tree and consist of a trunk, a crown with fronds, and are surrounded by a crescent island that acts as a breakwater. These islands host luxury hotels, freehold residential villas, unique water homes, shoreline apartments, marinas, water theme parks, restaurants, shopping malls, sports facilities, health spas, cinemas and various diving sites.

The palm-tree shaped Palm Jumeirah is ready for visitors and the two more islands, Jebel Ali and Deira are in varying stages of development. In an outlandish stroke, Jebel Ali will feature a breakwater that spells out a line of poetry by Dubai’s ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (“It takes a man of vision to write on water”).

Besides the Palm Islands, another similar attraction is The World which is an archipelago of islands that forms a world map in miniature. The islands are for sale, so if you can afford it, you can buy a “country” for yourself.

To explore the islands, your best views are by boat. A number of companies can get you out into the Gulf: Try which offers stately yachts, motor boats and speed boats. It’s not often that you can claim to have sailed around the entire World in an afternoon.

3. Burj Khalifa

Burj Khalifa is the world’s tallest building which pierces the sky at 828m. It is a stunning feat of architecture and engineering, with two observation decks on the 124th and 148th floors and a restaurant-bar on the 122nd. Note that high humidity often cloaks Dubai in a dense haze, making views less than breathtaking. To avoid wait times or expensive fast-track admission, book tickets online as far as 30 days in advance.

The most popular ticket is the one to the At the Top observation deck on the 124th floor (452m), where high-powered telescopes (for an extra fee) help bring even distant developments into focus (at least on clear days) and cleverly simulate the same view at night. Getting to the deck means passing various multimedia exhibits until a double-decker lift whisks you up at 10m per second.

To truly be on the world’s highest observation platform, though, you need to spring for tickets to At the Top Sky on the 148th floor (555m). A visit here is set up like a hosted VIP experience, with refreshments, a guided tour and an interactive screen where you ‘fly’ to different city landmarks by hovering your hands over high-tech sensors. Afterwards, you’re escorted to the 125th floor to be showered with interesting titbits about Dubai and the Burj and to take another virtual tour of major sights in an interactive attraction called A Falcon’s Eye View.

4. Dubai Museum

Dubai museum is housed in the Al-Fahidi Fort which was built in the year 1787 to defend Dubai Creek. The fort’s walls are built out of traditional coral-blocks and held together with lime. The upper floor is supported by wooden poles known as “handels”, and the ceiling is constructed from palm fronts, mud and plaster. In its history, the fort has served as residence for the ruling family, seat of government, garrison and prison. Restored in 1971 (and again extensively in 1995) it is now the city’s premier museum. The entrance has a fascinating exhibition of old maps of the Emirates and Dubai, showing the mammoth expansion that hit the region after the oil boom.

The courtyard is home to several traditional boats and a palm-leaf house with an Emirati wind-tower. The right-hand hall features weaponry and the left-hand hall showcases Emirati musical instruments. Below the ground floor are display halls with exhibits and dioramas covering various aspects of traditional Emirati lifestyle (including pearl fishing and Bedouin desert life) as well as artifacts from the 3,000-4,000 year old graves at Al Qusais archaeological site.

5. Dubai Aquarium

Dubai Aquarium – Underwater Zoo is proud holder of the Guinness World Record for the ‘World’s Largest Acrylic Panel’.
